Tartan meets Koru
It’s rare to walk into a gallery and find an exhibition that uses the latest technology to bring in new work from half way around the globe.
But that is what Tartan meets Koru at the Smith gallery in Stirling does.
This unusual exhibition from New Zealand draws on two cultures, Scots and Maoris and is the work of Mitchell Manuel.
He is an artist/ writer who uses his own mixed heritage of Scot/ Polynesian decent for inspiration.
Manuel first approached galleries in New Zealand but they were not interested. So he contacted galleries in Scotland and the Smith, recognizing the importance of the work, offered him a show.
The work was sent digitally then printed out on canvas. The result is a striking, and affordable, exhibition with many sales already recorded.
Is this the way of art exhibitions in the future?
