In Arnos Vale Cemetery
Walking here to do the last of my 100 miles for Cancer Research. Was delighted to find these gorgeous roses.
.Behind, on the right, you can see the tomb, or chattri, of Rajah Rammohun Roy, an Indian thinker, writer, and campaigner for education for Indians, and rights for women in India (especially against the tradition of suttee - where widows were burned on their husbands funeral pyre). He visited London in1833 - where of course political decisions on India were made at that time - then he came to visit friends in Bristol and died of meningitis. So he was buried here. He is still seen as an important figure in Indian social history, and annually on the date of his death there is a remembrance attended by British Indians and the high commissioner representing the government of India today.
The cemetery is my next door neighbour, it lies beyond my garden wall, though this part is down the hill a bit
