Bristol - Lloyds, 81 Henleaze Road

We were very excited to receive this contribution to our blip/crowd-sourced album of places associated with Lorna Lloyd and her Diary of the war (previously blipped in full in the LornaL journal, and now available as a podcast series with Lorna's great-great niece playing her great-great aunt). 

Lorna's paternal grandfather Gabriel Lloyd established a fishmonger business in Bristol in the nineteenth century. The family retail business passed down the generations and is still in existence today with one exception: in the 1970s Lorna’s first cousin David introduced some greengrocery, and by 1984 the business no longer dealt in fish. 

Lloyds greengrocer is located at 81 Henleaze Road, Henleaze, Bristol BS9 4JP - and here is a photograph of it! We have acquired the shot through blipper Tweedy. It was her sister who took the photo.

Although Lorna does not mention the shop in her war diary, she references Bristol several times, not least because this was the home city of her parents and the place that she was born (Filton).  When writing about war damage to major British cities on December 5th 1940, she explains that 'Bristol represented all the most settled, rooted aspects of my life. One lived in Ilford, Sheffield, Leigh, Malvern, but somehow Bristol was home.'
