Cognac Discovery - like champagne, cognac can only come from the region of Cognac in France.
This morning we departed by bus for a day excursion to the town of Cognac - which of course included two cellar tours and tastings of world famous cognac.
Our first stop was at the historical monument, the Chateau Royal de Cognacis, an old royal residence and the birthplace of King Francois l and a Cognac house where the Baron Otard and D’Usse Cognacs are produced.
After touring the Chateau, the cellars and tasting their cognacs we had free time to walk through the old village.
It was raining, but not to be deterred, my husband and I explored this delightful area of narrow cobblestoned streets and stone houses, many very old.
The rain was short lived and by the time we made our way to the stone bridge crossing the Charente River fluffy white clouds and sunshine were a very welcome sight.
During the afternoon we visited to the Hennessy Cellars which are established on both sides of the river.
Included in the extra photos are two of particular interest
1 - Wicker covered bottles
These are stored behind locked metal gates in the Founder’s Cellar. They have been selected for more than 250 years and set aside to mature and to be enjoyed by cognac aficionados. These are the oldest and most precious of cognacs.
2 - Barrels with flowers.
Hennessy have a long established tradition of acknowledging cellar hands who set up barrels in a perfect row for the first time. Flowers are placed on a barrel along with their name and the date.
