La Grande Mosquée

Today was our last full day in Paris and there were, of course, more things to see and do than we had time for. We started off with the intention of packing a picnic and going out to Versailles to rent bikes for the day. It was supposed to be a mix of sun and clouds, but when we woke up it was pouring rain! So we changed our plan to wander around and see some things in the neighborhood and play it by ear. We went to the Mosque, which was very beautiful, but we were soaked by the time we were finished seeing it and we went straight back home. We dried off, changed clothes, had some lunch, and waited for the clouds to break. Sure enough, the rain stopped but it was too late to go to Versailles. Instead we went to Shakespeare and Co., and then out to the 20th arrondissement to Marché des Puces de Porte de Montreuil, which I had seen online was open on Mondays, but evidently that information was incorrect. Anyway, we were only a short walk from Père Lachaise Cemetery so we headed over there to make the rounds to Gertrude Stein's, Edith Piaf's, Oscar Wilde's, and Jim Morrison's graves. We spent an awfully long time there, as the cemetery is very beautiful and so different from our own American cemeteries. From there were made our way home to have dinner and relax for the evening. One more evening walk in Paris is on the agenda, and then we are Moûtiers-bound tomorrow.
