Murder? or just Mayhem

Well I thought Hay on Wye was such a nice place to live. Apparently it hasn't always been so. I was walking through Cusop church yard on the footpath to Mouse Wood when I saw a sign to ' The grave of William Seward' Ellie had told me about it at tea time. In 1740 , South Wales was a rowdy place. Mr William Seward was a methodist preacher and had provoked riots in Monmouth on his way North. The unrest continued as he went up to Hay on Wye where he was met with a rabbley crowd who threw stones. Allegedly the local clergy were also involved. A big stone hit him on the head and a week later , he died.
Shocking! Apparently he was the first Methodist Martyr.
After all the excitement we were unable to find the footpath into the bluebell wood so came home again for a cold beer in the garden.
