Tropical Ruislip

This afternoon it was sunny and mild (>14 C), and as my Mother was feeling more energetic, we took her to Ruislip Lido ( about  three miles from her home) for a change of scene and some fresh air.
The lido was originally  created as a feeder basin for the Grand Junction Canal in 1811. Later, in 1933 the reservoir was reopened as a lido, with facilities for swimming and  boating. A narrow gauge railway was opened in 1945 and  has been extended to run about two thirds of the distance around the reservoir (at over a mile long ,making it the longest 12 " gauge railway in the  UK). 
We recalled going to the lido in the 1960's and my Mum swimming there. In the 1970s it fell into disrepair but was renovated about 15 years ago. Swimming  is  no longer officially  permitted, but the "beach"  is a popular place and there were many  people enjoying that area, as well as walking in the woods, cycling, and taking a train ride.

We last visited  in July this year:  Ruislip Lido, when I blipped a photo taken  at the same spot as today.
My main photo show the view across  the reservoir looking towards the  "beach". My first extra shows the train  (hauled by a small diesel engine called John Rennie ) which took us to the  beach,  as shown in my second extra, where we enjoyed a cup of tea in the cafe.    

My Mother, although tired afterwards, seemed to have loved  her trip. out.
