Danum Gallery, Library and Museum - Doncaster
This morning we were in Doncaster, so we visited the new home of the central library and museum which opened last year.
It has been built around the main part of the old Doncaster High School for Girls. The lovely facade and core of the old building has been preserved, including the old main stone stairwell and ceramic tiles which you can see in the photo. This has cleverly been incorporated into the new building. It's quite unusual, and I was fascinated and impressed by such a clever way of preserving an old structure. This photo was taken in the area which is now the cafe.
There's another shot in the first extra showing one of the side turrets. I thought about taking a photo from outside, but the weather was wet and truly horrible.
Back in 2017 I photographed the derelict and boarded up school building, but I didn't use it as a blip. It's in today's second extra for comparison.
I also learnt that Danum is the original name the Romans gave to Doncaster after the local name for the river Don.
