Red Car Gone, Red Car Back

Our car was stolen, but we got it back! Just as people said would happen - just as even the police officer said would happen - we got it back.
We had it parked on the street, next to the house; it was there yesterday (Monday) morning, but gone by late afternoon. Taken in broad daylight. I called the non-emergency police line, then this morning, the same police officer I spoke to called to say they'd found it and we could come and get it. He said it was stopped at an intersection about 6 miles from here, it had run out of gas, the ignition was ruined, and they'd arrested the driver. We had them tow it to the police tow yard, then filled a gas can and went to see what we needed to do next.
The ignition was torn apart, and the car was filled with unfinished fast food and tools. Lots of tools, tools good for thievery: screwdrivers, hammer, mallet, small electric drill with charger, hack saw blades, small knife, a backpack full of smaller tools (but no personal items), two new car batteries, a small tablet that was plugged into the cigarette lighter, and a blow torch.
Eric couldn't start it, but a tow-truck driver at the tow yard did. He said it wasn't out of gas, but had a dead battery. So he charged the battery and fiddled with the shattered starter until it finally started; he really knew what he was doing.
So, instead of having it towed home or to a garage, Eric drove it to his car condo and there it sits, waiting to get repaired. We don't know how they opened the car, so maybe a door was left unlocked. Looks like they ran over a curb as the rear bumper has some damage, but they didn't get the catalytic converter.
It was such a shock and such a sense of loss because, while the car (1993 Ford Escort) is almost 30 years old, it's such a great, dependable car. Not only that, it was Charlie's (Eric's dad) last car that his whole family was fond of.  It has been borrowed by brothers, nieces, and nephews. I love driving it with its great visibility, size, economy, and stick shift, and am so glad to have it back. See Extras if you want any of the tools.
