Wood Anemones

Our local park is awash with these little beauties at the moment, delicate little white flowers nodding in the breeze. Like many others, they open in the sunshine but close up if it's cloudy or it's getting late in the day, and in the evening they droop gracefully. They are also known as windflowers, since according to the Greek writer Pliny, they will not open until the wind blows. Although they look fragile they are in fact quite sturdy, well able to withstand the wind, but don't last long when picked and will wither quickly. They like lots of sunshine even though they are woodland plants and flower profusely in deciduous woods and coppices but need more sunlight than can penetrate thick, overgrown places. (I looked that bit up in my wild flower book!) But for me, they are what made today's visit to the park to enjoy the sunshine so very rewarding, photographically speaking.
