Malcolm IV….

gave the land to the Brodie family in 1160 and the family built a castle and loved here until 2003 when the last Brodie, Ninian  died. The 16th century tower is on the left and more recent wings added in the 17th and 18th centuries. Lewis Gordon, third Marquis of Huntly, burned the castle down in the 18th century. He was a hero of mine, not for this  but because he is a remarkable character and hid in Huntly’s Cave, near Grantown, courted a daughter of Castle Grant and married her, leaving her a widow with several children when he was killed aged 25! By then he had fought for the Scots, the English and the French, a soldier since the age of 13.
Here the Beech leaves glowed like flames!
