There is a large steel sculpture of a mussel called “Memory and Reflection” overlooking the sea on the approach to Musselburgh.   It is covered with barnacles depicting aspects of Musselburgh’s history with images of agriculture, the people, Romans and the town’s connections to the sea and the river. The back of the sculpture is like a mirror and reflects the sea and sky which unfortunately were dull and grey at the time although it cleared later.
