cold war architecture

Started the day with brunch in a lovely cafe on Schlossstrasse. The teenager went home after having been fed. We continued on through snowy streets (see extra) to the Grunewald. We had in mind to find the Karlsberg Turm. We didn't quite make it. Instead we found a wonderful industrial heritage site, a water treatment plant from the 19th century at the Teufelssee. Onwards and upwards (we expected to find the tower on a hill) we ended up at a cold war American listening post. The place was abandoned a couple of decades ago and is slowly falling apart. You can visit the place. It looks like it hosts street art and offers great views. We were too late to visit but must go back. The hill is surprisingly high at 120m above sea level. It turns out it is an artificial hill made up from the rubble coming from the buildings destroyed during the war. It also covers up the Nazi military-technical college that was never completed. We will definitely return to check out the place.

All in all we walked about 17km and took the S Bahn home again. A great day out.
