Thanksgiving '22 Melktert. Lumix M4/3 14mm
For this most American of holidays, we have just one "real" American in our circle: all the rest of us are imports. The food served is pretty-much the usual fare to honor our one native-born club member, but there have been many international contributions over the years. I decided to bring a South African touch to dessert this year. This is a traditional Melktert, or custard tart. The milk for the custard is infused with a cinnamon stick as it heats up. When the custard is cooked to just the first hint of boiling, it comes straight off the heat. Then a soupçon of vanilla essence is added, and, for Thanksgiving, a generous slug of Cointreau. Then the whole is sprinkled with a dusting of ground cinnamon, and into the fridge to set up properly.
