I wonder if the person responsible for resting a heavy board on top of a pipe up in the loft was getting confused between the metal conduit for the original lighting and plug wiring and some of the older water pipes. It's slightly less serious if a ceiling light fitting was made to plunge through a ceiling than a water pipe but it's still one of the sort of discoveries I hate to make.
