Pole carving

When I was at school there was always at least one name carved in every desk top in the class - normally through the cunning use of the standard issue pair of compasses with the wonky holder for a pencil stub.
It appears that this skill was subsequently transferred to employees of BT who used it to great effect to note the date of manufacturer of their telegraph poles (or someone with the initials BT is having a laugh).
