Death fight - spider alert
Whilst hanging out the washing this morning we came across this spider wasp which had paralysed a rain spider and was dragging it to a nest where it would lay an egg in the arachnid, before the nest is sealed up.
When the larvae hatches it feeds on the still living spider, keeping the vital organs for last so that the spider can be a source of fresh food for a long time! Once the larder is empty the larvae pupates and emerges as an adult wasp where it innocently feeds on nectar!
The spider is quite big - up to 5 cm in length so it is quite a feat for the wasp to drag the spider far. This one was trying to get the spider up a wall...it failed and eventually dragged it under a drain pipe where we left it in peace.
