Justification of cruelty

Throughout the book, this idea is shown through Ishmael struggling with the dilemma of acting as part of the army for given survival or keep on running and trying to survive on his own. This quote shows this dilemma very clearly by stating that in this type of situation, you need to be in good spirits if you want to survive even if what you're doing is wrong.
