Volvo Boat Race

Galway is the stopover for the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race for the next fortnight. The family and I went down to the harbour today to check out the craic. The boats arrived at 4am this morning, with 10,000 people out to greet them. Today there was a lot of activity in the water, but the main events don't kick off until the evening. We plan to go again during the week. The atmosphere today was a bit like a music festival- thousands of people, stalls, and events in the streets of Galway. Following a visit to the harbour we went to the 'King's Head' for Sunday dinner and a couple of pints of Galway Hooker. A lovely day, all told, but the kids were still tired from last night.

This blip is either one of the boats in harbour, or a giant swan about to eat some unsuspecting tourists. I know which one I hope it is!
