KINGFISHER Halcyon sancta
For us here in Christchurch, its getting into the kingfisher season. They've done their rearing of a family during the summer ( perhaps in the clay banks - higher in the hills ) and they come down into the mudflat areas to rekindle their romances with new matings( or re establish old ones.) they swoop and feed on unsuspecting crabs around the mudflats and whack them to a pulp on logs and branches.
They've been through the moult and they are now getting their new winter feathers.
as can be seen with this one - he's looking a colourful picture!
Its time for me to get out my hide and get some closeups of these colourful birds - they are my favourite !!
