Alison’s wake

Alison died after an unexpected diagnosis and short stay at a hospice. She was wonderful person, and will be missed by all of us who knew her. By Alexis, her partner since University days, more than all.

Standing room only at Warriston crematorium. Great reading by Martine, moving tributes from friends and colleagues, and then Alexis’ “eulogy” to Alison. Controlled, thoughtful, and moving. I may even ask him for the text.

Then down to The Granary on the Shore for, what Alexis described as “tea and stickies”, but was actually wine and (excellent) sandwiches.

Alexis worked the room. Nick, Ange, Ailsa, Gilbert, Richard, and Barbara sat at a table that was uncomfortably close to the slide show being projected. Those around the table were a model of chance connections.

Ailsa lived at the gardens delivering veg. Later, Alexis used to run the gardens. Later still, Ange and family lived in the barn, partnering on the last phase of Acme.

So far, so unsurprising. But Barbara used to be Ailsa’s manager at Elsevier. And I was at school with Rachel, Gilbert’s partner. And now Alexis, Barbara, and Rachel all work as gardeners together.

Exhausted from last nights excess, I return home, east reheated roast chicken, and watch Starship Troopers.
