Stinking iris
We are bracing ourselves for a cold spell with snow forecast for northern Scotland and some no doubt will reach us.
So the splashes of colour provided by the stinking irises in our garden, an unfortunate name for iris foetidissima, is welcome.
Gardeners World praises this native plant saying it’s the perfect plant for a shady spot, particularly beneath trees, where other plants struggle.
It comes into its own in autumn when its large seedpods split open to reveal rows of orange-red seeds that remain well into winter.
It‘s low maintenance and extremely hardy.
What’s more the Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
