Bookstore Speakeasy
As promised yesterday, this is truly the entrance to the Bookstore Speakeasy in Bethlehem PA; a single, dark doorway in the middle of the block. Step down two concrete uneven steps to a black door with a large gold bumblebee marked “BOOKSTORE” and tiny, tiny little numbers “336” at the top right.
So let me first explain about this joint ……
Live Jazz, ‘over the top crazy cocktails’ (my foodie sister’s quote after reviewing their website) and food from the prohibition era, waitstaff in 1920s garb and customers encouraged to do the same. And did I mention, Live Jazz !!!

So GPS directed me, but I passed it twice! On my 3rd circle around the block, we finally had to ask 2 gents on the street for directions to it, and, who coincidentally when we asked if it was a good place, answered that they were on their way to it. Score! Having secured a great parking spot at the end of the block, we returned to the doorway and ……..
All’s dark (atmosphere?!?)
Doors locked.
Knock & wait.
Knock & wait, again (need password ?!?)
A peek thru the mail slot (honestly, I wasn’t about to give up too easily !) revealed a shadowy interior …… lots of melted wax streaming down a table’s multiple-candle candelabras.
But then a guy pulling out of parking spot told us that they were closed because of a broken water pipe …..
after ALL our efforts …. Really ?!?
Sigh.
Well, we’re not done yet !!
We plan to go back !! Another time….
