Molten lava
With no sunshine today seemed like endless twilight. I did two very touristy things and thoroughly enjoyed both. The first was Flyover Iceland which was distinctly more exhilarating than I had anticipated, and I had to briefly close my eyes a couple of times. It was one of those motion seating things and a wraparound screen simulating flight over mountains and glaciers.
The lava show was packed full of geological information delivered by a former Gaelic medium primary school teacher from Stornoway – he’s married to an Icelander. We exchanged a few words of Gaelic at the end and gossiped a bit about education folk in the Western Isles. Anyway we got to see real lava as a volcano erupted in front of us with molten lava cascading down towards us.
On the recommendation of Iain from the Lava Show I made my way to the far end of the harbour and sampled an ice cream from Omnon Chocolate, it was indeed one of the best I e ever had, creamy, salty, and not overly sweet. The extra, I couldn’t resist.
My evening swim was at Sundhöllin, a little cooler than Laugardalslaug and not so steamy. It’s the oldest pool in Reykjavik and has undergone a certain amount of modernisation since I was last there in 2010. The art deco exterior is unchanged.
