Mars

I tried again just after midnight. Mars was a lot closer to the moon but not yet near to disappearing behind it.  Clouds were moving in too, by then.  I woke at about 4:30 and sneaked a look out of the window; the clouds had completely moved in by then, and there was snow on the ground.
