Fireflies or Lightning Bugs?
That was the question asked of audience members as they filed into the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center tonight prior to the lecture on these insects. Apparently it's a regional distinction in the US - in the eastern parts and Appalachia they're more often called lightning bugs, or either, and in the west they're called fireflies. I wonder about in other countries?
The blip, of course, is neither. He's an eastern screech owl who was treated but unable to be released back into the wild due to neurological injuries after having fallen out of the nest a number of times. He was quiet during the talk and hopped around stretching his wings and making faces. I blipped him a month or so ago as well.
Tired now but trying to make some cookies tonight (Spitzbuben) for a gathering tomorrow morning, and the dough is awfully crumbly and uncooperative - eek.
