Cold coffee
"There you go; one skinny latte, one chocolate twist."
"Thanks."
"You're welcome. I don't see why we had to come here - I don't understand why we couldn't have stayed at the guest house and had breakfast. I could've quite fancied the full Scottish."
"Yes. Well."
"What's 'yes, well' meant to mean? Are you still pissed off with me?"
She said nothing.
"So I take it that's a 'yes' then."
"What do you think? I thought I could trust you not to try it on with me in the middle of the night."
Heads were turning. Shit.
"Keep your voice down. Look, I was asleep. I was confused. I thought you were Jen, that's all."
"So you said."
"I said I was sorry, what more can I do?"
No reply.
"Look Kate, I really am sorry. I'm as embarrassed about this as you are, if not more. I wasn't trying anything on, honest. I just thought I was having a dream. Er, a really realistic dream."
"Just as well you woke up when you did then, eh?"
"Kate," I sighed. "I can't tell you how sorry I am. But isn't it time we started talking about that plan of yours? Don't you want to know what I think of it?"
I swear she actually made the sound "harrumph" - something I'd only ever seen in books.
"OK. You've got a point. But first, get me another chocolate twist, will you? I'm starving. And don't give me that look. It's my money you're spending, remember?"
