Barnstaple Library
Barnstaple's "new" library was officially opened on May 24, 1988. A red brick building on the edge of Castle Green.
Before building began on the site at Tuly street, research by archaeologists and local historians revealed that from 1618 - 1839 it was the site of the parish workhouse where the residents manufactured serge cloth.
It was then sold to a Frenchman, Camille Dornat, who manufactured mineral water.
It eventually closed in 1980.
The walkway has numerous arches along the edge to keep the light off the books I guess?
There were hints of blue in the grey sky when I wandered out this afternoon - and a bitingly cold wind. Snow and ice appear to have vanished - for now.
