Cow Lane

This little venelle once ran from the harbour through an arch to where I’m standing across the road from the old harbour. The market was just at the end of the venelle outside the Town Church.
Cattle were either walked straight to the market for slaughter and sale or if they had lost condition on their boat journey were walked up the road to graze on the fields until they put weight back.
Today is Homecoming Day in our sister island of Alderney. We celebrate Liberation Day on 9 May each year which commemorates the liberation from German occupation in 1945. There were no locals left in Alderney that could be liberated. Just about everyone opted to evacuate and the German’s built concentration camps in Alderney. It was 15 December 1945 before any locals were able to return to the island.
