Gare de l'est
I took the train to Luxembourg this afternoon from Gare de l'est. This painting in the station caught my eye. It is called "Le Départ des poilus" and was a gift from the artist, Albert Herter, in 1926. Herter's son was a volunteer soldier in WW1 and died in the conflict. Herter represents himself and his wife on the two sides of this painting and the figure in the centre is a portrait of his son. Soldiers left for the front in WW1 from Gare de l'est - more about the painting on this page.
It was already getting dark when I arrived in Luxembourg, so I'll post a photo from here tomorrow. I made my way on the (free!) local train to the suburb of Luxembourg city where the University is located and checked in to my hotel.
