After a two-week scandal over parliamentary expenses, the speaker of the House of Commons was forced to resign. The first time this has happenned in over 300 years.

Sri Lanka's president, Mahinda Rajapaska, declated victory in the government's 26 year war with the rebel Tamil Tigers. Thousands were thought to have died in the final few days of fighting.

After talks in the White House, Israel's Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, said that the Palestinians should "govern themselves", but refused to meet Barack Obama's clear-cut demand for a Palestinian state.
