Helvellyn from Latrigg

Large on Black is the only way!

We had planned a walk to a couple of fells in the Grasmere area today. As we drove past Thirlmere, the road looked a little snowy, on the road down to Grasmere there was heavy snow on the roads and low murky cloud. As the two fells in question are hard to navigate even in clear conditions, we turned round and walked over Latrigg, we did think about continuing over Longscale Fell, but the paths up Latrigg were all sheet ice (it had rained last night and froze on contact with the ground). Good sense prevailed and we called it a day just on Latrigg. The views down to Helvellyn were wonderful for a few moments though so it turned out good in the end.

Rained again in the evening, again froze, paths and roads are lethal - so we certainly will not be using the car tomorrow.
