A Boxing Day meander at Ring Haw was the ideal antidote to the overindulgence of Christmas Day. It was relatively quiet on the bird front, though there were a smattering of Redwings and Fieldfares in the trees and hedges, and I had very good views of a couple of Marsh Tits, feeding on thistle seeds and rose hips.
Of course, the usual pair of Red Kites was patrolling the site, and there was a brief exchange between them - I'm not sure whether this was courting or aggression! As I reached the car, I heard the soft calls of Bullfinches and managed one shot before they disappeared into the tangled scrub.
There was certainly some mild aggression between two of the Manx Loughtan rams grazing the Calcining Banks, with several head butts, some locking of horns and then a final chase. The remainder of the flock and the Highland cows were completely unperturbed by this.
Earlier in the day I managed to capture a Carrion Crow mobbing a Buzzard over our garden. The corvids aren't keen on Red Kites, but as these are daily visitors they don't always bother to react. Buzzards are rarer and its presence provoked a much stronger response!
