Inspired by a Quaker burial ground.
It has been raining all day today. I took this one yesterday at Yealand Meeting House.
The headstones are of a simple, uniform design, reflecting Quakers’ rejection of class, believing instead that all people are of equal importance. This was a revolutionary idea in the seventeenth century when everybody ‘knew their place’ and where they came in the pecking order.
It was important, even, to know to whom you had to doff your hat.
