Manchester - Old and New
This morning I took mum into Manchester as she had a hospital appointment, and as her appointment was very early, we went into the city afterwards.
We went for lunch at Jamie's Italian which was delicious, and then had a wander round in the sunshine so I could take some photos. It's been sunny, but very blustery and the wind was cold, so we didn't stay out for long.
So my blip for today is taken in the centre of Manchester - I chose this one because of the contrast of the buildings. On the left had side are the modern buildings of Selfridges and Harvey Nichol's department stores, and on the right hand side is the Old Corn Exchange which was built in 1837.
In its heyday the Corn Exchange was the gathering spot for thousands of traders from all over the region, but after World War II trade gradually declined and it fell into disuse. From the mid 1970's it became a market for small stallholders, but was damaged in 1996 by a bomb attack on the city. It was later renovated and re-0pened as a shopping centre now known as 'Corn Exchange Manchester'.
Anyway, it's now time for me to head back to the airport for my flight home - I hope it's a smooth flight with all this wind! I won't have wifi and don't arrive home until about 11pm, so apologies if I don't get round to commenting tonight!
