Montrose

We made the mistake of having breakfast at the pub, this morning. It's not that it wasn't good - it was great! - but it seemed to operate on the basis that one hadn't eaten for twenty-four hours and, furthermore, wouldn't be eating again that day.

Unfortunately, the weather precluded a post-breakfast walk, so we opted to go out for a drive. Down at the seafront, where the car was parked, the tide was very low, lower than I think we'd seen it when we were here before, and you could see all the rocks just outside the harbour entrance. (First Extra)

When the tide is higher, these rocks are located just below the water's surface, so it's essential to come in at the correct angle, as you can see from the second Extra. During the day, I reckon you might be able to manage this by following the line of the harbour wall, but at night there are lights, one at harbour level, one up the hill, that you can line up to find the safe passage.

(For those of you who are fans of 'Swallows and Amazons', this will be familiar from the harbour of Wildcat Island.)

Today's Blip was taken while we were parked up by the River South Esk, on the seaward side of the Montrose Basin. As you can see, the weather was improving, so we went back into town for a mooch and a drink at the Market Arms, which, whilst unprepossessing from the outside, was a lovely little boozer within.

After that, we took a trip up to Gourdon. We're planning to walk there tomorrow, so we were scouting out places for lunch. While we were there, we saw a lovely little fish and chip shop, with a restaurant above it. We decided on an early dinner, only to find that we couldn't get in without a reservation! (Fortunately, the Harbour Bar next door had a free table for two.)
