Hummingbird on a drum
For some reason, when I tried to post this, I got a message that the photo was taken in December when it was taken today. Anyone else getting that incorrect message?
Several years ago, my Indigenous student teachers and I had the chance to learn how to make a drum from an Indigenous elder. On the day we were to make them, my Indigenous Australian friend was visiting, so of course he used the materials that were meant for me. How could I not give him that chance? He thought he might have problems with taking the drum back to Australia because of the deer skin used, but he didn't.
I added a texture that covered part of the art.
One of the very thoughtful students asked a mutual friend, Stuart Pagaduan, to paint a hummingbird on her drum and she gifted it to me. She knew that I loved hummingbirds and his art. I was so touched by her kindness. I have another drum with Stuart's art on it and two original paintings. He's a very talented artist from Cowichan Tribes, the largest First Nation band in BC.
