1972: President Nixon launches the space shuttle programme

Quote Of The Day
" ..... the Space Shuttle program will give us routine access to space by sharply reducing costs in dollars and preparation time."
(President Richard Nixon)

The cheapest of several post-Apollo programmes presented to Richard Nixon by the Space Task Group led by Vice President Spiro T. Agnew. The other options included a human expedition to Mars, a lunar-orbiting space station, a base on the lunar surface and an Earth-orbiting space station. No matter the fiscal pragmatism behind it, the space shuttle programme was an incredibly exciting and benificent human adventure.
