Gas fire

We have a couple of gas fires downstairs that we haven't used since we put in double glazing about 12 years ago.  This one was always pretty ineffective anyway as all the heat went up the chimney. 

Now it's been served with a safety notice which will spur me on to get rid of it and do something else with the space.  Any ideas?
