The Road Ahead

I learnt something new today. Apparently in local terminology-

A Coffee shop is actually a small group of tiny shops selling food ( different kinds of food) usually below a residential building;

A hawker centre is a large group of food stalls in a location which does not have any air conditioning and is usually located out doors

A food court is a hawker centre located indoors (must have air-conditioning)

An indoor coffee shop is a small food court.

A shop selling coffee is still thankfully a cafe

Finally a local shop selling coffee is traditionally called a kopi tiam which is a rough translation for a 'coffee shop'.

Food for thought?
