Bridge Over Santa Rosa Creek

We have taken to walking down to this bridge at the end of our road most days to see what is going on with the creek. We were there this morning but didn't take this picture as it was raining and there were no shadows, although the ferns have come back along the edge.  I posted this picture a couple of years ago. A hole is now developing in the middle of the bridge which doesn't bode well for anyone who has to drive over it. The water is a couple of feet below the bridge, so it's the water from above that poses a threat at the moment.

I wish it was possible to publish the little video I took because not only does it capture the power of the churning muddy water, but also the roaring sound which almost obliterates the sound of my voice. We're not outside much these days  but when we are, the sound of the creek is a constant accompaniment to whatever we are doing. I pulled up pictures of the creek that I have taken over the years and this is definitely not unprecedented. The creek rises every time we have a significant rainfall. But it also goes down pretty quickly when the rain stops. this year it isn't stopping....

It isn't so much the strength of the rain, although there have been some
seriously heavy downpours, but there are more storms predicted almost daily through at least the 20th. We're not building an ark just yet, but there's a lot of wood in our garage we may not need for a new porch....

We got a lovely Christmas present from Jim and Dana of a round trip to San Diego to visit my brother and Meg. It was scheduled for today, but John and I both had the feeling that January probably wasn't the best month to go.  Perhaps some prescience warned me, for the rains began a few days after Christmas  and when I rang Rick yesterday to talk about another date, he told me he had just tested positive for Covid.

We've rescheduled for April....
