The barking dog...

In his letter to the Bishop of Canterbury, Saint Boniface compared himself to a dog that barks when he sees thieves and robbers breaking open, undercutting and destroying his Lord's house, but, because no one comes to his aid, at last the only thing he can do is to howl softly. His plan to renew the church had turned into a fiasco, he feared. His journey to the Frisians therefore almost resembled a flight.
