Fort Altena is located on the Toll in Werkendam and is owned by the Brabant Landscape. In recent years it became the recreational port of the Land of Heusden and Altena. After extensive restoration, the fort is now in all its glory and combines harmoniously recreation, nature and history.

Originally, Fort Altena, built between 1840 and 1850 southeast of Sleeuwijk, was only a round earthen redoubt, with a detached bombproof tower which was surrounded by a moat with a drawbridge.

In the years 1878-1880 the tower was rebuilt and enlarged to a long stretched bastioned fort, on both sides of the tower bombproof barracks.
