Needle in a haystack!
This is Solomon's-seal, Polygonatum multiflorum, just showing its arched stem and green-grey leaves emerging from a sea of green Dog's Mercury. I was thrilled to find this today - just two small plants in around 50 acres of woodland. I was searching for it, ever hopeful, whilst carrying out a plant survey of the nature reserve as it used to be well-known here in a couple of areas of Ash woodland until about 12 years ago. Along with Lily of the Valley, it hasn't been seen since the turn of the century and there have been a number of suggested reasons for its demise - ranging from an increase in deposits from rising levels of atmospheric nitrogen to a series of rather dry years in this area of woodland. Anyway, when you are out in the woods searching for a particular remembered colour combination or distinctive leaf shape, and you've already covered acres of woodland floor, and then your eye suddenly rests on just the image you've been hoping for...it really is the best feeling in the world! Nothing more to be said.
