The Old Home Town, Looks Just The Same
A-Z of Troon and It's Surrounding Areas (because I don't think I'm gonna get a-z completely just in Troon.
The most Lovely Molly Collie has in the past, delighted me with her a-z of Cornwall, and I decided that I would have my own little challenge with an A-Z of what I like to call, home.
I started here, at the corner of Ayr Street and Academy Street.
Academy Street, is the one in the Shade, called so I presume because the School was built there. There was a "Little School" and a "Big School", which went on to respectively become "St Patricks" and "Troon Primary", and the Big School, was rebuilt as "Marr College. The original Little School has been knocked down and one of those lovely purpose built-all-singing-all-dancing blocks has been built. I don't think it has half the character, but I'm sure it is fit for purpose.
Ayr Street - so called because if you keep going South Along here, you will eventually reach Ayr. I like to think it is called Air Street though, because the wind on this corner is unbelievable. I have see wee Granny's hanging on to the corner in an attempt to turn.
The Herbary, used to be round the corner in Academy Street, next door to a Health Food Shop - but that was all bashed through and is now a day care centre for the elderly.
My Nunk when he was a lad, way back in the 1930's, used to live on the top floor of the red sandstone building - the one right at the top with the great views!
The shop with the Flags is the new RNLI Shop - it's full of Seashore Decor and Lighthouses, and all other fund raising stuff. The shop next to that is a Journey through Time where we met the man who joined the Foreign Legion and writes books! Next door is Homes and Interiors... this used to be "Mantrap", a boutique... Not that I ever remember buying anything out of it.
CC2 is a lovely hairdressers, and It used to be a newsagent, with little dark nooks and crannies, Snoopy pencils and note pads, and a supply of Invisible ink. The newsagent moved next door - and took over a couple of premises and the original newsagent became an Antique shop for a while.
This part of the street over looks the Parish Church, and it is here on many a sunny day, you will see clumps of people gather to watch the arrival of a Bride, her groom and associated guests. It's always lovely and sociable - everyone talks to everyone else, and everyone always has something to say about the outfits!
I remember pulling up here as a bridesmaid to my sister 26 years ago.... The other bridesmaid and I had threatened to hijack the Jag. and take it to the Harbour and steal a couple of sailors... neither of us had a date for the Wedding! We didn't as it turned out - we should have had, I would have my himself a week earlier!
