Scurvy
The scurvy grass is in full bloom at the moment and the air is heavy with its heady fragrance.
Scurvy grass is a relative of watercress both belonging to the cabbage family. Whereas watercress thrives in pure spring water, scurvy grass is most at home in salt marshes, as in the photograph.
The plant acquired its common name from the fact that it is rich in Vitamin C and was used to prevent and to cure scurvy among sailors during and after long voyages. It was taken on board ships in dried bundles, or as distilled extracts, its very bitter taste usually disguised with herbs and spices.
