Starting to crochet

Been wanting to learn to crochet for years, and have made many attempts. now borrowed a different book from the library with better instructions, and this wonky piece is the furthest I've ever got! A lovely way to spend a Sunday, after saying farewell to J and planting the hanging baskets.
