Frozen to Death.
Poor frozen fox. After a quick session of taking photos of frosted moss for Tiny Tuesday Ginny was anxious to continue scenting and pulled me in the direction of this secluded place where I could see what had attracted her - this poor creature frozen solid from the night's harsh frost - its ear still erect as in life. It looked completely unharmed so probably not a road victim as we were at the allotment and not near the road. Close by was probably its den (an abandoned badger sett) no longer usable as its main passageway was flooded completely to ground level. It looked very much like the fox we saw recently that slunk off away from the tracks where it had found a sunny spot to dry off after the night's rain - a healthy adult in full coat and bushy tail. Sad to see.
And, yes, only a fox, one of many usually seen lying by the roadside. But before any thoughts of "just a fox but what about those people living and sleeping rough"....it did make me think of them who also shared a cold night out in wet clothing and of some of those who maybe like this fox didn't make it through.
