Gummosis

Our ancient cherry tree has sap oozing from damaged areas. This amber like substance is apparently known as gummosis.

This behaviour is very common on stone fruit trees, including apricots, peaches, plums and cherries.

The most common cause of gummosis is a fungus called called Leucostoma.

The amber caught the sun momentarily and in turn  caught my eye.

Maybe I’ll shin up the tree and harvest the product and carve it into jewellery.

I wonder if any insects or spiders have been caught in the amber in perpetuity. Or perhaps even a dinosaur.
