The Church of San Ginés
Madrid: backblip 2 of 3
The Church of San Ginés, Calle Arenal
San Ginés is one of the oldest churches in Madrid (with references to it dating as far back as the 9th Century). The current building dates to 1645. We passed this quite a few times, and each time I was rather taken by the brickwork and I love the satisfying geometry of the architecture. These small bricks seem characteristic of quite a lot of the older buildings in the historic centre of Madrid.
We also explored the La Castellana area of Madrid (north-east of the very centre): we walked from Sol to Salamanca and we saw a huge gathering of Harley Davidsons (here is one departing early) and two American "big-rig" lorry tractors; we saw them all ride past the Palacio de Cibeles, before they stopped and gathered at the Plaza de la Independencia. We moved on and bought ice creams in the beautiful Parque del Retiro, before walking around the Ritz, the
Museo Nacional del Prado, San Jerónimo el Real, and Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid.
It was a lovely day in the sun!
